Why would God plant the Tree of Good and Evil?

Some of my non Christian friends often express how the feel the story of mankind sinning doesn’t make sense. Like if eating from the Tree of Good and Evil is that bad, why would God put it there. If God didn’t put it there in the first place, Adam and Eve would not get to sin. How would you answer questions like this?

Hey ! That is a good question. Actually, it does not say anywhere in this passage that God planted this tree. So maybe it is the work of the Devil ?
I am thinking about that cause I recently came across the passage in Mt 15:13 where Jesus says "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots". Maybe there is some sort of connection ?

God said if you eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you would surely die. that sounds bad to me

WOW! I didn't know there was a verse like that in the Bible. That is a good connection.
